Taking it easy in the South of France

After some long days on the road and a few bustling days in Barcelona we accidentally stumbled across Collioure – one of our favourite places to date and somewhere that should make it on the bucket list for most. We parked at the top of the hill overlooking the town as the streets were too narrow for Big Karl, a blessing as the streets were too narrow for most cars as well. Early Sunday morning we jumped in the shuttle with the rest of the campers (we were the youngest by 40 years) to explore the small town. Jackpot – it was Sunday market day and I went a little nuts on the 5€ bikinis and sun dresses…

The afternoon was spent at the pebble beach in the middle of the town having a picnic and dipping into the crystal clear water when the heat got too much. The pictures of the narrow medieval streets don’t do the place justice –  simply stunning.

Needing to push on, we set our sights on Avignon in Provence – another small (and very old) walled city with the Rhône river running around the outskirts. Even though we are on ‘holiday’ we still need to do chores every now and again (to avoid any safeguard water or toilet emergencies) and Avignon provided a timely opportunity for washing, cleaning and charging. After the work was done, we retreated to the pool as we couldn’t face the city in 38° – unfortunately the pool was too shallow for Damien to practise his backies.

We spent the next day exploring Avignon and digging into fresh pastries (mostly me) along the way. While we considered taking a wine tour into the local and well known Rose region, we managed to sip away a bottle in the process and took our own ‘wine tour’ in the campground for a fraction of the price. Fun Fact: there is no skill in buying wine here, we usually spend about 3€  and haven’t had a bad one yet!

Two nights is our preferred time in one place and after a refreshing stop in Avignon it was time to hit Côte d’Azur (or the French Riveria because we couldn’t pronounce that at the time). Time to see how money talks!

À bientôt (see you soon)
