We headed out of Berlin to a place called Templin, situated in the middle of a National Park, to stay the night and shorten the drive the following day to. As with most driving holidays we didn’t expect everything to go to plan 100% of the time, especially when I am in charge of navigation. While I tried to cut some time off our journey, the end result was us being stuck on a one-way, very rough, cobblestone road in the middle of nowhere for around 40 minutes with no other option but to carry on bouncing. The only positive to our detour was the fact there was no one else around so we stopped to take a picture. Autumn was well and truely here which these colours.

We never planned to visit Sweden or Denmark as we initially thought it was too far off our (very rough) track, however we made up a few days and caught the ferry from Sassnitz, Germany to Tellebourg, Sweden. We spent a few days in Malmo, slightly longer than we planned, but there was some recovery required after watching the RWC semifinals. We explored the stylish town of Malmo and discovered the local staple, kanelbullar, pretty much a pastry cinnamon roll which has established itself in every store, cafe and supermarket leaving the whole town smelling like sweet cinnamon. Mmmmm.

Our next stop was across the water to Copenhagen via the Øresund Bridge, an impressive structure which starts as a bridge and then transforms into a tunnel halfway along – it looks like you are going to drive into the water! The weather was freezing and we pulled up to a carpark on the outskirts of Copenhagen; ready to explore the Danish capital the following day. We started early and fuelled by coffee, we walked through the bicycle-frenzy that was the inner city; passing Tivoli Gardens, the Palads Teatret, Queen Louis Bridge and the City Hall.

We joined another walking tour and learnt the history of the capital; from the vikings, medieval times to the present ,it was an educational day which ended in the sunshine of Nyhavn Harbour and the royal Amalienborg Palace. We loved Copenhagen and enjoyed the entire day from start to end, the only exception was the $10 coffee…

It seemed we had skimmed through Autumn and it was now Winter in Scandinavia. We woke the following day with ice on the inside of Big Karl’s windows and there was no way I was having a cold shower. Thankfully, we are equipped with such things as gas heating and hot water which saved the day.
Our short stint North was well worth the visit, I am now successfully hooked on cinnamon rolls and can definitely see why Denmark is the 3rd happiest country. A few more bridges and we will be back in Germany (we seem to just keep coming back) but this time to Hamburg!
Bye for now.
